The 27-year-old Russian pianist Dmitry Masleev has won one of the biggest piano competitions in the world, the International Tchaikovsky Compeition

The young Russian was one of the audience's favourites during the final rounds of the competition in Moscow. In his final performance he played Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto and Prokofiev's Third Concerto. Second prize went jointly to Lukas Geniusas and George Li.

Ahead of his performance in the second round, Masleev performed a section of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 exclusively for Classic FM:

The cello category, which was launched at the same time as the piano competition, in 1958, was this year won by the Romanian cellist Andrei Ioniță.

No gold medal was awarded in the violin category, which has launched the careers of violinists including Gidon Kremer and Viktoria Mullova, but the silver went to 20-year-old Yu-Chien Tseng from Taiwan.
