Bio

Leon Haxby (b. 1993) has always been fascinated with the effect of quotation and re-contextualisation in music, and is now pursuing this field of study both in composition and through his Masters research topic “Music’s Uncanny Valley”.

Leon began composition lessons with Darren Bloom at Forest School in London and was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where he graduated with a BMus(Hons) in Composition in 2015. Leon is currently undertaking a Masters at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam where his main tutors are Wim Henderickx and Richard Ayres. In the past, Leon has studied under Richard Causton, Edwin Roxburgh, Ed Bennett, Joe Cutler and Howard Skempton. He has also taken masterclasses from Rebecca Saunders, Mario Garuti, Anna Korsun and Colin Matthews.

Leon has had pieces premiered by distinguished ensembles and performers including the DoelenKwartet, HERMESensemble, Syzygy Quartet, Ossian Ensemble, David Le Page, Patrick Johnson, Sara Minelli, Rowland Sutherland and Colin Alexander. Leon was the winner of the Orchestre Nouvelle Generation Composers Competition 2016/17, and the Birmingham Conservatoire Orchestral Composition Prize 2015, and has had compositions premiered in world famous festivals such as the String Quartet Biennale Amsterdam and TROMP Percussion Festival. His scores are held in the Royal Academy of Music and American Viola Society libraries, and his pieces have been performed in prestigious music venues such as Kings Place, Goethe-Institut Rotterdam and Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, as well as various venues throughout Europe, North America and South Africa.

In addition to classical composition, Leon also writes advert soundtracks on a regular basis for clients such as GHD, Lanvin, Japanese Vogue, Mariana Jungman (London Fashion Week), Nowness.com and Cent Magazine. He has completed a number of scores for award-winning short films 'Wanted' by Graeme Montgomery, and 'Genesis' by Beatrix Haxby.

Leon is also a bassoonist, having studied with Adam Mackenzie (New London Chamber Ensemble) and John Orford (London Sinfonietta). Leon was a member of Essex Youth Orchestra for four years, and has written new repertoire for the instrument including a number of Concert Studies and also a Bassoon Quartet.

Leon studied DJing with international artists Kasey Riot and Noah Priddle at the London Sound Academy, and has now been active as a DJ for a number of years. He enjoy playing eclectic sets ranging from UK Bass to Jungle, and has performed at venues such as SET, Dalston and alongside artists including Chiminyo and D’vo.
