Rare and in outstanding condition, these 19th Century antique timpani were
crafted around 1850 in Rotterdam by the famed German instrument maker Gerhard Hanken & zoon (Son). These timpani have brass bowls, stylized sunburst brass and bronze lugs, and brass T-handle taps. The calfskins are made by Kalfo in Ireland. The drums have diameters of 58cm (23 inches), and 66cm (26 inches), which are ideal sizes for most 17th to 19th Century repertoire. The drums come with individual padded bags and two wooden Litik quad-pod bases with their own bag. The sound file attached is a live radio broadcast of the Messiah with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra using these instruments.
The drums were refurbished about 15 years ago and are in regular use. The have been owned and lovingly maintained by a professional timpanist for the past 33 years.
