WHERE NATURE MEETS MUSIC

The International Festival, Master Course and Solo Concerto-Aria Competition In less than five years, the Music in the Alps has evolved into an annual major international cultural event taking place in Gastein Valley. Its unique combination of concerts, workshops, lectures and masterclasses draw audiences from different countries to hear, meet and personally spend time with the performers from around the world during the time of the festival. The Festival works directly with Touristenverband in Bad Gastein and with the New York Foundation for the Arts. In 2018, the Festival will take place between the 31st of July and 19th of August. It will broaden performing opportunities in Gastein Valley and Salzburg and will add seven more activities and performing to its curriculum: Conducting Masterclass Intensive, Orchestral Program for all Instruments, Choral and Voice Program, Jazz Ensemble and Guitar Programs, “Rising Stars Program for young performers on all instruments and Solo Concerto-Aria Competition for advanced instrumentalists and vocalists. These programs are designed with the sole purpose of helping each participant to extend his or her musical knowledge and performance skills and to enhance their present life in community music and better prepare them for their journey into the professional world of music. FROM THE FOUNDER

SHARE YOUR PASSION SHARE YOUR STORY I like people’s stories. Stories about curiosity, determination and courage. Stories about an unexpected chain of events that lead to a miracle. Our story began in 2013 on a spontaneous one-week trip for Derek Rozmes, my former student, and me. Between lessons, rehearsals and performances, Derek and I traveled and attended concerts. (He still recalls going over major and minor intervals while en route to Bad Gastein.) This idea, where a group of young musicians and their professors gather to collaborate and share their love of music, inspired the following years. The Bad Gastein Tourist Bureau and the magnificent Elisabethpark Hotel warmly welcomed us to their beautiful gem of a town. Since the beginning, Bad Gastein has become our “Mecca”, where nature inspires musicians to share the stage and tell their own stories through their artistry and sincerity. No translation is needed, as music knows no boundaries. Summer 2018 marks the fifth year of our magical story, “Music in the Alps”. With its growth come new programs, including a young performers’ competition; choral and orchestral performances; jazz and rising star programs; and artists’ showcases. Born as a dream, making its first steps as a small summer program, and growing into a vibrant music festival in one of the most beautiful places in the mountains: the story of “Music in the Alps” is unfolding. Come be a part of it and celebrate with us! Dr. Irena Portenko FEBRUARY 2018 ISSUE - Page 5

They are able to enjoy the tingling sensation of thermal water on their skin; breathe the fresh, clear mountain air; discover the charm of the Belle Epoque; and conquer the mountains. Many cultural events are also held throughout the year in Bad Gastein, such as traditional Austrian nights, jazz concerts, classical music events, and the international “sommer.frische. kunst art festival.

Elisabethpark’s very own Sergey Sokolov greets participants and guests of the International Festival “Music in the Alps” and wishes all of them inspiration on the way to success; while his wonderful crew at Elisabethpark, as usually, would ensure that everybody’s comfort and rest is taken care of. Arkady Shilkloper gives about one hundred concerts in addition to his masterclasses per year around the world in Russia, Europe, USA, Canada, Japan, Panama, Colombia, China, Australia, etc.

Benjamin Levitsky Composer | Pianist

Benjamin Levitsky is one of the most interesting Russian composers of his generation. He is a pianist specializing in the music of A. Scriabin and Russian Avant-garde. Levitsky performs frequently in Russia, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany and France. Shilkloper’s and Levitsky's program “Around Mozart” is dedicated to Mozart’s genius and, interestingly, contains no Mozart’s music in it. However, it is presented as a fantasy on a theme of Mozart’s creative work.

OBJECTIVE: INDIVIDUAL PROGRAMS For four years, "Music in the Alps" student concerts have been received with great enthusiasm by both local citizens and international tourists, who are actively visiting Bad Gastein in the month of August. Austria is a country that has retained a keen interest toward classical music. Live performances of such a kind are similar to Austrian traditional celebrations, during which families and friends gather to enjoy music written by old masters and some musical offerings from nowadays. This appreciation has been extremely inspirational for our performers, as they have always presented their pieces whole-heartedly.

Page 26 - FEBRUARY 2018 ISSUE

Our internationally recognized, dedicated faculty is selected according to their significant performing and teaching background, as well as their experience, vision, and mentoring style which helps to ignite a spark of inspiration in students’ hearts and minds. Our professors serve as generators of further success for those lucky ones who attend the program and have the opportunity to learn from them. The individual programs are structured around solo and chamber music performances during the festival period. Participants are to prepare their solo pieces, that will be scheduled as a part of joint students' and faculty concerts, which is one of the unique features of the “Music in the Alps” Festival. Performers will receive their music for chamber music concerts approximately two to three months before the festival. Students are advised to prepare their pieces well enough so that they gain a more satisfactory experience during collaboration with their international peers. Instrumental and vocal lessons are scheduled as a part of the curriculum of the Master Course. Participants may choose their instructor and sign up for lessons. The amount of lessons is to be agreed upon between teacher and a director. Please remember that our teachers are also performers; as much as they are happy to instruct the students, they also will need to prepare their own performances! Decision on distributing teaching activities will be based on teacher’s availability and will be notified by e-mail.

STUDENTS WERE ASKED WHAT THEIR EXPERIENCE DURING THE 2017 FESTIVAL WAS AND HOW THEY FEEL BEING SELECTED TO BE COMING BACK AS A PART OF THE 2018 TEAM. LIDIIA At the 2017 festival, there were things, that have occurred to me as a surprise: after the festival my musical perception went onto the next level, existence of which I had assumed, but never “visited”. I also encourage people to join "Music in the Alps" as guests-listeners. V L A DYS L AV Professionally, I have grown due to the masterclasses with Sergei Milstein, Yong Hi Moon, Waleed Howrani, and also during communication with other musicians. It was an amazing international experience with the teachers, other participants, UNFORGETTABLE CONCERTS that made a huge impression on me. I think the benefit of taking part in the master-course depended on what everyone wanted to get from it. The main thing is your surrounding, the professionalism of people around. NEXT STEP IS YOURS. I would do as much as possible to make the next year’s festival even more interesting and helpful for its participants. It would be a real pleasure for me! Z AC HA RY I am extremely excited to be returning to Bad Gastein for my second year as Assistant to the Director for “Music in the Alps”. It is such a surreal experience for me to share so much music with such a diverse group of musicians. A NA S TA S I A It was well-structured and diverse and it truly connects people, no matter how old they are or where they come from or how much skill they have. We gather at MITA to work together to make each other better musicians and better people. I would tell people: come to get inspired and to inspire.
