About Prof. Mark Gothoni

Finnish violinist Mark Gothoni began his musical training aged six at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, and subsequently became a pupil of Ana Chumachenco in Munich. He received further guidance from Shmuel Ashkenasi in Chicago, and Sándor Végh in Salzburg.

Winner of several international competitions, Gothoni was honoured in 1991 as “Debut of the Year” at the Jyväskylä Arts Festival in Finland.

Mark Gothoni has subsequently performed as soloist and chamber musician around the world, including at major festivals in Europe, the United States and the Far East, and concert halls such as Berlin Philharmonie, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Lincoln Center, Wigmore Hall and Kioi Hall in Tokyo.

Gothoni has served as Concertmaster of the Zurich and Munich Chamber Orchestras, amongst others, and was Leader and Musical Director of the European Union Chamber Orchestra from 2004 to 2008.

Mark Gothoni is first violinist of the Orpheus Quartet, and member of the Mozart Piano Quartet with which he records exclusively for the German label MDG.

As professor of violin at the University of the Arts Berlin, Gothoni gives masterclasses all over the world. He is also head of the chamber music department at the Savonlinna Music Academy in Finland.

Mark Gothoni plays on a 1709 A. Stradivari on loan from the University of the Arts Berlin, and on a 2015 Ivo Iuliano violin.
