Karen Su, USA

Special Prize for the best interpretation of a work by S. Prokofjew
Biography

Karen Su (1998) started playing the violin at the young age of 4. Karen was born into a musical family, with her father and older sister both being violinists. She received her first lessons from her father, Elmer Su, and soon after started studying with Professor Vesna Gruppman.

Karen was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, where she attended public school until she was 15 years old. Karen was then accepted into the Rotterdam Conservatory in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, as the youngest student in the bachelor program. She continued her studies with both Vesna Gruppman, and Igor Gruppman, the concertmaster of The Rotterdam Philharmonic.

As a soloist, Karen has performed with orchestras all around the world, such as Guanajuato Symphony Orchestra (Guanajuato, Mexico), Boca Del Rio Philharmonic (Veracruz, Mexico), Fujian Symphony Orchestra (Fuzhou, China), Sinfonia Rotterdam (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) and also in the United States. She has performed in prestigious and historical halls such as the Fujian Grand Theatre (Fuzhou), De Doelen (Rotterdam), TivoliVredenburg (Utrecht), Teatro del Bicentenario (León), and El Teatro Juárez (Guanajuato).

Karen was the featured soloist in The Gergiev Festival hosted by The Rotterdam Philharmonic, where she performed Prokofiev’s 1st Violin Concerto. In the upcoming season, Karen has solo engagements with The Boca Del Rio Philharmonic, Rijnmond Symphony Orchestra, and The Sinfonia Rotterdam.

Most recently, Karen gave the Dutch premiere of the recently discovered Violin Concerto No. 2 by Florence Price, with Sinfonia Rotterdam and Maestro Conrad van Alphen.

In 2018, Karen graduated from The Rotterdam Conservatory’s Bachelor program at 19 years old with Summa Cum Laude honors. She is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree at Rotterdam Conservatory with professors Igor and Vesna Gruppman.
