Bedford Modern School currently employs more than 250 members of teaching and support staff.

We offer teachers a competitive salary which is above the national teachers’ scale and fee remission for both BMS and the other Harpur Trust Schools (subject to space and entrance criteria). Support staff have the opportunity to join the Harpur Trust’s stakeholder pension scheme and a generous holiday allowance plus Christmas closure days.

As part of our recruitment process, we carry out Disclosure and Barring Service checks on all new staff who commence work at BMS as well as Prohibition checks for teaching staff and managers. We also carry out online searches on shortlisted applicants.

Important Notice to All Applicants

Some areas of BMS contain reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC), a building material which was commonly used in the construction of schools, colleges and hospitals from the 1950s until the mid-1990s. This type of concrete is lighter than its modern counterparts and therefore more prone to collapse. The UK government changed its guidance on Thursday 31 August 2023 and issued a directive that educational institutions with RAAC present should immediately close all affected areas. Consequently, there are some areas at BMS which are currently inaccessible while remedial work is taking place. This is a temporary situation and we are working hard to ensure that the school is fully operational again as soon as possible, but in parallel we are pursuing exciting plans to develop the site still further in the next couple of years.
