The Brazilian classical guitar site, Guitar Co-op, has a remarkably frank and comprehensive interview with the last of the guitar lions, the accomplished John Williams.

Much of the conversation, with Stephen Goss and Marcelo Kayath will be of invaluable technical interest to guitar players.. But John is an astute observer of musical habits and there is much to enjoy in the four lengthy segments of their chat.

You should bookmark the site if you love the guitar. There is nothing like it online.

I thought this was going to be about composer John Williams.

Who is this guy with the guitar?

  • Steven Holloway says:

He won’t be the “…last of the guitar lions” as long as Julian Bream is alive, regardless of whether Bream is still giving performances. I detect a drop more of the notorious SD personal bias here, that of non-musical origin.

    • Nick says:

I have tried to make sense of your comment – without success! To call him the last (in a line of) guitar lions is perfectly correct in my view if you look at the comment from the perspective of both age and performing career – Bream retired from live performing a dozen years before Wiliams.

A lovely website! Thanks for pointing it out to us!

What, Sharon Isbin, Miloš Karadaglić and Jason Vieaux aren’t guitar lions?

    • Nick says:

Karadaglić a lion? Oh come on! What are his accomplishments compared to Williams or Bream – or Yepes or Segovia? Nice guy, but he’s on a different planet!

  • Elene Gusch says:

I also was going to mention Jason Vieaux in particular, as well as David Russell. And Sharon Isbin surely counts as a lioness! There are plenty of new pride members to take over.

I’m sorry, but Kazuhito Yamashita is the greatest guitarist on the planet full stop. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQX4EKXks5g

Liat Cohen should also be mentioned as more than noteworthy if you’re compiling a list.
