Graduate Assistantship: Conductor of Orchestras & Opera

The candidate would be pursuing a Master of Music performance degree at SUNY – Fredonia, one of the premiere schools of music in the SUNY system. The School has 650 undergraduate majors, 45 full-time faculty, excellent facilities and a strong orchestral, opera program. (
The program includes a 90-piece symphony orchestra performing significant works from the standard literature, such as The Planets, Scheherazade, and Petroushka, symphonies by Berlioz, Sibelius and Mahler, choral/orchestral masterworks, as well as contemporary scores. Recent collaborations have been with composers Robert Moran, Jennifer Higdon, and solo artists Rachel Lee, Zuill Bailey, Jeffrey Khaner, Yo Yo Ma and others. The performances of the College Chamber Orchestra, a touring ensemble, range from historically informed early music to world premieres. Recent Opera productions have included Carmen, La Bohème, and Don Giovanni.
As the only Assistant Conductor, there is significant podium time with these ensembles. Candidates for the degree would also assist with annual opera productions, conduct opera scenes, direct our Sinfonia, a repertory orchestra, and cover each of the orchestra and chamber orchestra concerts. They also have the opportunity to teach an undergraduate conducting class. As an assistant, one will also gain valuable experience with many of the extra-musical activities facing music directors.
Assistance: 9 credits of in-state graduate tuition per semester for the two years, plus a stipend of $6800 annually.
