Our musicians are full-time members of the RAF, representing the RAF and the United Kingdom on the concert platform and the parade square, both at home and abroad.

Applications for the role of saxophonist can be made through the RAF Recruitment Website which also contains detailed information regarding the application process. Applicants will be expected to meet nationality and residency requirements for the RAF. The process involves an interview, medical and fitness testing as well as musical auditions.

Musical auditions take place in two stages.

1. A pre-screening recording of a performance of two works at a minimum grade 8 ABRSM (or equivalent) standard.

2. Specialist Interview/Audition:
a. Formal musical audition: a performance of one-two musical works with piano accompaniment (minimum grade 8 standard), pre-prepared band excerpts, scales and arpeggios, aural exam and sight reading.
b. Ensemble playing: with either a concert band or chamber ensemble.
c. Interview with a RAF Director of Music.

Successful applicants can expect to join an organisation with exceptional musical capabilities, providing regular opportunities for travel and personal development, and can take advantage of many of the perks of military life (non-contributory pension, subsidised accommodation and food, free medical and dental care etc.)

Any questions or want more information? Please contact RAF Music on RAFMS-Recruitment@mod.gov.uk. They can also offer online careers presentations, as well as opportunities to visit and rehearse with one of the bands.
