Real-time MRI captures incredible video of opera singer performing during scan

Researchers at the Freiburger Institute for Musician's Medicine have revealed what really goes on inside an opera singer's mouth when they perform.

It shows baritone Michael Volle singing an aria from Richard Wagner's 1845 opera Tannhäuser.

The incredible footage reveals the contorting vocal tract of Mr Volle seen through a real-time MRI scanner.

Prof. Dr. med. Matthias Echternach of University of Klinikum approached the opera singer to take part in the test as there are still many open research questions in singing, concerning register changes, the number of registers and general acoustic resonance properties of the vocal tract.
