Bio

An alumnus of the famed jazz programs at the University of Miami and the University of Northern Colorado, David Champouillon is an Artist/Clinician for Bach Trumpets, former Professor of Trumpet/Jazz and director of Jazz Studies at East Tennessee State University. He also performs as a member of The Lenore Raphael Quartet including recent performances at the Arturo Sandoval Jazz Club (Miami Beach, FL) the Sarasota Jazz Club (FL), Dazzle Jazz Club (Denver), the Tri-Cities Jazz Fest, the Blue Plum Fest (Johnson City, TN), Halle Cultural Center (Raleigh, NC), and The Wild Goose Meeting House (Colorado Springs, CO). Champouillon is also a frequent performer on cornet with Americana artist Ed Snodderly. He is in demand throughout the nation in all genres, especially in the performance mediums of jazz trumpet and Baroque trumpet literature. He has been a frequent soloist with various orchestras, wind ensembles, jazz ensembles, and brass groups throughout the country, having performed in over 30 states and Canada. He has performed and presented master classes at various schools including the University of Southern Mississippi, Colorado State University, University of Wyoming, University of Northern Colorado, University of Alabama-Birmingham, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, the Lamont School of Music (Denver University), SUNY - Onondaga Community College, and Greenwood University. His former students include those performing professionally, as trumpet in regional and premiere military bands, at leading graduate programs, Grammy Award winners, and as music teachers. Champouillon holds the Doctor of Arts in Music – Trumpet Pedagogy/Performance and Theory/ Composition (University of Northern Colorado), the Master of Arts in Music – Trumpet Performance (Eastern Illinois University), the Bachelor of Music in Studio Music and Jazz (University of Miami), and the Associate of Applied Science in Music (State University of New York - Onondaga Community College). He has studied trumpet with the late Elliott Topalian (Syracuse, NY), the late Professor James Mosher (SUNY – Onondaga Community College), Daniel Sapochetti (Syracuse Symphony Orchestra – retired associate principal trumpet), Laurie McGaw (San Francisco Symphony Orchestra – retired associate principal trumpet), the late Gilbert Johnson (The Philadelphia Orchestra – retired solo trumpet), Edmund Cord (Utah Symphony – retired principal trumpet, Indiana University), Edward Gornik (Utah Symphony – retired co-principal trumpet), George Coble (Syracuse Symphony – retired principal trumpet), the late William Fielder (Rutgers University), and Professor William Pfund (University of Northern Colorado - retired).

A former solo trumpet in both classical/jazz idioms in the United States Air Force Band system at age 20, he has also been a featured soloist with the Hellenic Camerata, Westminster Chamber Orchestra, Ogden City Concert Band, Johnson City Community Concert Band, ETSU Wind Ensemble, Johnson City Symphony, University of Northern Colorado Orchestra, and the Skaneateles Brass Ensemble. He has performed at the M&T Jazz Fest, Notre Dame Jazz Festival, Budweiser Jazz Festival, Budweiser Rhythm and Blues Festival, Tri-Cities Jazz Fest, Blue Plum Fest, Highlands Jazz Festival, Greeley Jazz Festival, and several International Trumpet Guild conferences. He is the former Principal Trumpet of the Salt Lake Symphony, Johnson City Symphony, Utah Chamber Orchestra, Ballet West, Utah Opera, Ash Lawn-Highland Opera Company, Utah Festival Orchestra, Skaneateles Brass Ensemble, the Tennessee Brass, and Johnson City Civic Chorale. Extensive performance credits also include the Utah Symphony, Oakland Symphony, Lehigh Chamber Orchestra, Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra, Syracuse Symphony, Danville Symphony, Greeley Philharmonic, Symphony of the Mountains, Southern Mississippi Festival Orchestra, Billy Vera Big Band, Central New York Jazz Orchestra, Vince DiMartino, The Temptations, The Drifters, The Moody Blues, Jay Beckenstein, Tom Schuman, Marvin Hammlisch, Mel Torme, Marvin Stamm, Rufus Reid, Ed Soph, Bill Mays, John Blake, Avery Sharpe, Butch Reid, Sumi Tonooka, Wallace Roney, Sean Jones, Bill Watrous, Ed Shaughnessy, John Jensen, Don Menza, Arturo Sandoval, Disney Ice Shows, Jerry Butler, Gary Graffman, and Su Li. A two-time Downbeat award winner for Best College Big Band, Dr. Champouillon has also been an adjudicator for the National Trumpet Competition - Jazz Trumpet Division and the International Trumpet Guild Jazz Competition, published author including Bill Pfund’s Beginning and Intermediate Trumpet Methods, and International Trumpet Guild Journal and Conference lecturer. His accomplishments and opinions are listed in The Pros Speak – Embouchure, Trumpeter’s Pocketbook II, and Hickman’s Trumpeter’s Encyclopedia as one of notable trumpeters in the world. Recordings include Ed Snodderly’s recent release “Little Egypt and other Delights”, two United States Air Force Band albums, UNC Jazz Ensemble “Alive XV: This One’s for Sandy”, “Syracuse Symphony” CD, and the NEA funded “Appalachian Harmony”. He also is a jazz columnist for The Brass Herald, brass reviewer for Oxford University Press, jazz reviewer for Prentice Hall and McGraw-Hill, and has consistently been named to Who’s Who in America.
