Played professionally for the past 18 years in groups such as the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and many others, strung with both metal and gut strings.

The cello is on the smaller side in both size and sound, but has a wonderful and distinctly Italian timbre, and it carries beautifully in large halls.

Octagonally shaped, premium pernambuco with a fully silver-mounted ebony frog.
■ weight: 76.7 grams
■ centre of mass: 8.98 inches
■ overall length: 720 mm

Edwin Lothar HERRMANN (1914‒1987) hailed from a storied dynasty of achetiers spanning over 200 years. At the height of his craft, his bows sold for as much as those of his now better-known French colleagues. HERRMANN learned his craft from his grandfather Franz Albert (1868‒1960) & his father Edwin Otto. After completing his apprenticeship, he continued to work with his father until 1950, when he opened his first workshop. In 1961 he moved to Markneukirchen, carrying on making highly sought-after bows.

Its round stick’s elasticity, yet adequate firmness, produce versatile playing characteristics and effortless sound projection ‒ on a par with far more expensive French bows.

■ weight: 79.6 grams
■ centre of mass: 8.94 inches
■ total length: 712 mm
■ length of stick: 696 mm

Friedrich was a student of W. A. PFRETZSCHNER, and he worked with Franz A. NÜRNBERGER II in Markneukirchen for many years (cf. photo of MEINEL in the Nürnberger workshop; photo courtesy of Christian A. Nürnberger). From 1918, he successfully ran his own workshop. MEINEL’s bows are artistically made; the NÜRNBERGER influence is recognisable in the shape of his frogs & heads.

Each year an exceptional group of musicians from school age through to undergraduates, postgraduates, teachers, amateurs, and faculty meet for a week and collaborate in a flexible and creative environment.

Solo work and chamber music form the basis of the course. There are performance opportunities and masterclasses throughout the week, as well as side by side staff/student chamber groups. Most students mix solo and chamber music, which is organised in advance. However some prefer to focus exclusively on chamber music, and others on important solo work.

It offers space not only to refine technique, but to deepen and strengthen your artistic voice.

Masterclasses combine intensive individual lessons with chamber music in a supportive, challenging setting. We work in depth on sound, phrasing and style, with special attention to historically informed performance practice as a source of colour and expression within the core repertoire. Participants are encouraged to bring their own repertoire, ensuring the work connects directly to their development.

Collaboration with piano and harpsichord enriches the musical dialogue. Technical refinement, artistic reflection and performance opportunities support both growth and confidence on stage.

IMPORTANT INFO FOR FOREIGN NATIONALS:

To substitute with the New World Symphony (NWS), you must already be authorized to work in the United States (e.g., Green Card, O-1 visa, or F-1 with CPT/OPT authorized by your school). NWS does not petition visas for substitute work.

Video Requirements:
• 2–3 minutes of a solo work (or exposition of a standard concerto/sonata)
• Four contrasting orchestral excerpts of your choice

Excerpts do not need to be selected from NWS’ posted fellowship repertoire lists. (Those lists apply to fellowship applicants only.) Some instruments have specific requirements—see Acceptd for details.

Results and further information will be emailed as soon as possible after submission. If invited to join the substitute list, status remains active for 12 months from the date of notification.

NWS limits the size of its substitute pool. Substitute musicians may be engaged to augment the orchestra for larger repertoire or to cover absences during the season. When engaged, NWS provides airfare, housing (if needed), and a stipend. Musicians are responsible for ensuring availability and securing any necessary institutional approvals if currently enrolled in school.

Althofener Meisterklassen

ALTHOFEN MASTERCLASSES

Applicants who have served as a substitute for this specific position in the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra or who hold a permanent co-principal, or higher position in an equivalent orchestra are automatically qualified for the live audition, and therefore do not need to submit a video. If this applies to you, please inform us by email at auditions@konserthuset.se together with your CV.

If required, the recording for the digital pre-selection must be uploaded to Muvac by 12 April 2026. The video can be recorded in two takes, one with the excerpts and one with the concerto. The concerto may be recorded with or without accompaniment. The recordings should be without cuts or edits, and you should remain in frame the entire time.
