Your postgraduate studies should nurture that existing artistic personality so that you can make a difference in the fields in which you choose to work.

The programme offers advanced training to talented traditional musicians from diverse undergraduate degrees or their equivalent. We have designed the programme so that you take ownership of the learning process throughout the degree and beyond, whether in the professional world or further studies (such as a PhD).

Our staff are professional performers, composers, and scholars of Scottish traditional music (and beyond) with active careers. They understand the challenges that you’ll face in your career and can provide help and advice as you progress. As well as working with our core staff, you’ll get the opportunity to learn from visiting artists and academics from all over the world.

There’s a great atmosphere in the department and the Conservatoire as a whole. We have a close-knit community where you will perform and gig with other students and staff, making friends for life.

As for professional and institutional collaborations, we work closely with the National Piping Centre, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig and the Celtic Connections and Piping Live festivals in delivering a varied and vocationally robust experience for its students.

Piping tuition on the MMus is delivered in collaboration with the National Piping Centre — an internationally recognised centre of excellence in Highland Bagpipe teaching.

MMus Performance & Pedagogy

Develop your knowledge, understanding and skills to teach music education as an instrumental or vocal studies instructor.

The MMus/MA in Performance and Musicology is intended for highly skilled instrumentalists and singers who wish to pursue academic research into music and musical practices alongside advanced study in performance.

Individual lessons in the principal study are at the heart of the degree, supported by a wide range of performance based activities within the the rich musical environment of the Conservatoire.

The Musicology module will introduce you to the study of music as a scholarly endeavour, with a particular emphasis on historiography, aesthetics and criticism, and editorial techniques.

The programme culminates in a number of assessed public performances, alongside a written dissertation on a self-chosen issue, source or repertory related to your principal study.

MMus/MA Performance

Our MMus/MA Performance is a flexible programme with a strong emphasis on performance, designed to refine and extend your musicianship in preparation for your next steps into your chosen career path.

The MMus/MA Performance programme is designed for students who aim to make music their life’s work.

Perhaps you aspire to become an opera singer, a concert artist or orchestral musician; to be a collaborative pianist, compose or arrange; to work as a freelance instrumentalist or to be a conductor, music leader or animateur. You may be planning to coach or teach, either as the sole focus of your professional life or, more likely, as part of a portfolio career. You might have your sights set on doctoral study, on making a contribution to Scotland’s vibrant traditional music culture or may perhaps wish to fulfil one of the vital specialist music roles in related art forms such as ballet.

Whatever your rationale for joining the Conservatoire’s MMus/MA programme, you are here to refine and extend your musicianship in preparation for your next steps.

Our MMus/MA Performance pathway places a main emphasis on performance instead of academic work, with 80 of 120 credits for MA students and first year MMus students dedicated to your principal study. For students undertaking the two-year MMus, this rises to 90 credits in second year. The programme is designed to be flexible and in both stages you will be able to choose your other credits from a range of options including performance classes, ensembles, rehearsals and masterclasses, and/or other courses from across the many disciplines we offer here at the Conservatoire.

MMus/MA Joint Principal Study

The MMus/MA Joint Principal Study (JPS) degree is intended for exceptional students who are capable of performing at masters level in more than one discipline. The photograph here is a 'sister' instrument from the same consort, so the markings will be a little different, but otherwise exactly as pictured. The instrument is 56cm long and has a crescent shaped stamp. No serial number. It is in a dark blue canvas case like the one pictured, with a gold corduroy lining. It is not designed to play as a solo instrument, and is pitched much higher than standard consort pitch, so sadly not really of general use, as it is very non-standard and built to be used as part of a set. The crescent stamp is also a little lower than Adrian’s normal position, which should make the instrument more readily identifiable.

Gregynog Young Musician 2026

THE GREGYNOG YOUNG MUSICIAN COMPETITION was founded in 2005 and has become a prestigious annual event.
