This course, led by clarinettist Heather Roche and cellist Erik Borgir, explores chamber music of our time as a dynamic space for collaboration, experimentation, and artistic exchange.

Rather than a traditional masterclass structure, the course emphasises process and discovery. Through coached rehearsals, collaborative workshops, and open discussions, participants will investigate rehearsal strategies, communication within ensembles, interpretative decision-making, and the practical realities of contemporary chamber music-making today.

Participants will have opportunities to form new collaborations, and to perform for the wider festival community.

A fabulous instrument which I have loved ever since I first played it. I am selling it due to retirement. Instruments need to be played and since I have stopped playing, it now needs a new home.
It is bright but never brash and has a huge sound. It is very good in an orchestral setting and easy to hear under the ear. The tone across all the strings is very even and the A string is not nasal. The C is meaty! I use Pirastro Obligato strings on it as they seem to suit it well.
True to the ethos at William Harris Lee, the neck is slim and the instrument is light, making it very user friendly. It was beautifully made and I haven't had any major issues with it. There are a few superficial battle scars due to its hard working professional life. The pegs are original and don't need replacing at this time, however there was some decoration on them which was plastic and has now fallen off. A shame but only cosmetic. No ivory.

A really beautifully balanced bow, with a strong but flexible stick. It is a pleasure to use and it bounces perfectly. A lot of sound with little effort - the bow does the work for you! It has always had tinsel lapping. If this is changed to silver it becomes too heavy and unbalanced. I am selling due to retirement and having stopped playing.

Music Academy at La Loingtaine

Join us for a unique musical experience from the 9th to the 16th of August in the beautiful and inspiring surroundings of La Loingtaine.

It has an even tone across the strings and responds well, making it a comfortable instrument to play. It has a good range of colour and would be suited for both advancing players or enthusiasts alike, seeking a warm, rich sound. It has had only one owner, purchased directly from the maker, and is in excellent condition. Trials can be arranged in London.

About the maker: Based in Australia, James W. Robinson graduated from Scuola Internazionale di Liuteria (Cremona, Italy) in 1973, under the tutelage of G.B. Morassi and F. Bissolotti. Following his studies, Robinson worked making his own instruments as well as restoring many fine instruments for violin houses in New York, Boston, London, and Tokyo. His instruments have been the recipient of four international awards, including a silver medal for viola tone in 2014 at the VSA competition, Indianapolis, USA.

Youth Orchestra Lab - Residenza Artistica Musicale

Accademia del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino - Bando di ammissione per strumentisti

An impressive 16” viola made in Cremona by Daniele Ciaccio is now available at Ruschil London. Strongly Brescian in appearance and tone, the viola is finished very professionally and is made to perform.

Made in the antique style with a bold outline, f holes, scroll and tone, the viola is distinctly Brescian in its modelling, while maintaining a contemporary Italian style. Meticulously constructed with performance in mind, the viola is a perfect medium size,16”.

Tonally the viola is impressive on every string, excelling in each register. This is a viola that has been made to perform. Rich, confident, clear, accurate and far reaching, the viola has a bright core that will be heard easily in a trio, quartet or for solo work. The viola is finished with Thomastik Spirocore C,G, D & Larsen A strings for a confident, accurate and rich sound.

Across three high-stakes rounds, this career-launching competition will uncover Australia's most exceptional young instrumentalists, culminating in a spectacular grand final performance at the Sydney Opera House, which will be televised on ABC TV and broadcast on ABC Classic.

In Round 1, applicants will submit video performances that will be presented to our adjudication panel. 12 semi-finalists will progress to Round 2, which will take place as live performances across several Australian capital cities. From the 12 semi-finalists, three will be selected to perform a concerto with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the grand final in November 2026.

There are significant cash prizes on offer for all three finalists, plus recording and performance opportunities for the winner.

Applications are open to Australian instrumental musicians aged 31 and under. Entry is free.
