The Purcell School
Teacher of Academic Music and Musicianship
The Purcell School is looking to recruit a full-time Teacher of Academic Music and Musicianship, on a fixed term basis, for September 2022 or January 2023 through to mid-July 2023. Candidates should indicate whether they are available to start in September or January. The Academic Music Department is the largest department in the school and it's goal is to assist students in becoming informed, imaginative and enquiring musicians. Department staff work closely with each of the school's instrumental departments, and there are particularly strong links with Composition, with several teachers working across both departments. The Academic Music Department offers a unique programme of study, which performs an important part of every Purcell Students' specialist musical education. Analysis and aural awareness are the heart of everything we do, and specialist training in these areas is a core component for every student. In Years 7 to 9, students study a series of set works, which form the basis of creative and analytical projects designed to expand their general musical knowledge and inform their practical instrumental studies. In Year 10, the students sit the Cambridge IGCSE exam, and in Year 11, they undertake an intense harmony course (in preparation for the Sixth Form) and an in-depth study of larger scale works. In addition, there is an introductory course in Music Technology. In the Sixth Form students in Year 13 work towards the Cambridge Pre-U qualification in Music, whilst students in Year 12 follow the OCR A Level Music syllabus. Students who intend to apply for university to read Music are prepared for entrance examinations and interviews. Each year, a number of students go on to read Music at university, including Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, King's College, London, SOAS and Harvard. This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced teacher or a newly qualified teacher to work within this unique musical environment.
