Artistic/Music Director

Having built a musical foundation on performances of great classical works, the ​Santa Barbara Master Chorale has reinvented itself, increasing the skill level of individuals, of the chorale and expanding its repertoire beyond traditional classical works. Our recent performances have been well received as noted by audience comments and local reviewers.

We seek an Artistic Director/Conductor who will continue our positive growth and development, bring creative programming ideas and experiences with a wide range of music from different eras, styles, and cultures.

We seek a director that will continue our upward trajectory in pursuit of choral excellence.

Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement the artistic vision for the Chorale in alignment with its mission and values.
- Demonstrate the ability to select and interpret a wide range of concert choral literature, from traditional classical to contemporary.
- Select repertoire that balances artistic excellence, audience appeal, and diversity of styles, cultures, and eras.
- Plan, rehearse, and conduct at least two major concerts annually (plus special events as approved by the Board) that reflect prepared lesson plans and effective score study.
- Demonstrate effective conducting and teaching techniques that lead to appropriate chorale expression.
- Establish creative and long-range musical objectives and identify and implement specific strategies and actions to achieve these objectives.
- Collaborate with the Board and committees on concert planning, budgeting, marketing, and community engagement.
- Serve as the public artistic face of the Chorale with donors, patrons, media, and community partners.
- Recruit, inspire, and retain volunteer singers; cultivate an inclusive and supportive artistic environment.
- Assist in development efforts by participating in fundraising events and donor cultivation.
