Houston Grand Opera is one of the largest, most innovative, and most highly acclaimed opera companies in the United States. Winner of the GRAMMY for Best Opera Recording in 2026, HGO has won a Tony, three GRAMMY awards, and three Emmy awards. It is the only opera company to win all three honors.
The 2026–2027 season marks the beginning of an important new chapter for HGO, as internationally acclaimed conductor James Gaffigan joins the company as Music Director Designate, assuming the position of Music Director in the 2027–2028 season. Musicians joining the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra will have the opportunity to contribute to this important period of artistic growth and to collaborate with a world-class roster of conductors, directors, singers, and creative artists.
Led by Maestro Gaffigan, the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra is an elite ensemble of 49 musicians and the dedicated orchestra for the Houston Grand Opera. The 2026-27 Principal Percussion per-service rate is $410.14 with 73 guaranteed services. Core members may participate in the HGO health insurance plan with a percentage paid by the Association. An 11.99% contribution is made to the AFM Pension Fund in the 2026-27 season.
