Slovak State Philharmonic Košice was founded in 1968 as the second professional symphony orchestra in Slovakia. Since its establishment, the orchestra has become one of the leading representatives of Slovak musical performance, both at home and abroad.

The orchestra has appeared at major international music festivals and in important cultural centres across Europe, Asia and the Americas, including Vienna, Salzburg, Berlin, Budapest, Prague and New York. In addition to its concert activities, Slovak State Philharmonic Košice has made numerous recordings for radio, television and record labels, including Naxos and Marco Polo.

Over the years, the orchestra has collaborated with many distinguished artists, including Igor Oistrakh, Gidon Kremer, Julia Fischer, Edita Gruberová, Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Jiří Bělohlávek, Thomas Sanderling and Alexander Rahbari.
