Principal Study Teacher Vocal Studies (classical music)

The Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp, part of AP University College Antwerp, is organising an open screening of the job market for the teaching assignment Principal Study Teacher Vocal Studies (classical music), starting in September 2027. Both current staff members and external candidates are welcome to apply.

The Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp is a leading institution for higher arts education. It is the only institution in Flanders to offer bachelor, master and doctoral programmes in music, drama and dance, alongside a graduate programme in stage and event techniques and educational programmes for teaching within an artistic discipline.

Job description

You will train creative musicians through individual and group-oriented classes, rehearsals, pedagogical projects, research, etc.

Profile

• You are an artistic personality, active as a professional classical singer in solo, Lieder, opera and/or oratorio repertoire on established national and international stages.
• You are proficient in a broad repertoire, ranging from Baroque to contemporary music.
• You have an extensive record of concerts, productions and recordings.
• You have experience in coaching all voice types.
• You have strong ties with the Belgian music scene, including part-time arts education, and are acquainted with the Belgian educational system.
• You have relevant artistic and pedagogical references as a team player.
• You combine artistry with pedagogical talent and can demonstrate your pedagogical skills.
• You have a team-oriented attitude and highly value collegial collaboration.
• You show great enthusiasm, which you pass on to students.
• You are experienced in or open to interdisciplinary project collaboration.
• You are interested in further developing your artistic practice through artistic research and are prepared to stimulate this among students.
• You encourage students’ artistic and personal development and motivate them.
• You are flexible and committed.
• You live or work in Belgium or are willing to work in Belgium.
• You have a fluent knowledge of Dutch and English or are willing to become proficient in both.
• International candidates have a European nationality or a work permit for Belgium.

Selection procedure

• Phase 1: application, at the latest on Sunday 29 November 2026 at 11:59 pm.
• Phase 2: selection based on the application by the Artistic Board of Classical Music.
• Phase 3: screening on 12 and 13 January 2027, evaluated by a commission of internal and external experts. The screening consists of a public recital (a 30-minute programme covering at least three style periods, at least two of the disciplines Lieder, opera and oratorio, and at least one contemporary work; candidates provide their own pianist or harpsichord player), a public lesson with 2 students of different levels and voice types (30') and an interview.
• Phase 4: possible employment.

What we offer

If the screening leads to employment, the candidate will be offered a remuneration as a guest professor. The assignment volume is calculated proportionally, based on the actual number of students enrolled in the class.
