7th Unisa International Voice Competition

7th Unisa International Voice Competition

20 - 31 Jan, 2026

Unisa International Music Competitions take place every two years and alternate between piano and one of the following: strings, voice, organ, and wind. Unisa is the only competition offering both jazz and classical categories which run in parallel. Winners of the competition secure engagements with South Africa’s leading orchestras and recital venues the following year.

For 2026, the Unisa Music Foundation will host the 7th Unisa International Voice Competition from 20 to 31 January at the University of South Africa Z K Matthews Great Hall.

The first Unisa International Music Competition was held in Pretoria in 1982. The category for the inaugural competition was piano and the first prize was awarded to the Canadian pianist Marc-André Hamelin who has since then established himself as one of the world’s leading concert artists.

Successful applicants will receive an economy return ticket as well as accommodation with host families.

This competition appears to include an online round that charges over €35. musicalchairs is concerned that the fee for online judging must be commensurate with the value offered to applicants whether they are successful or unsuccessful. Please therefore study the guidelines for this competition carefully:

  • Is the Jury for the online round published and are they widely respected musicians?
  • Does each Jury member listen to the submissions in full?
  • Do applicants receive detailed and considered feedback about their complete performance/score from the Jury?
