Late 19th-Century Mittenwald Cello – Warm, Resonant Sound

Late 19th-century Mittenwald cello, as identified by the auction house from which it was purchased.

An attractive old cello with a beautiful reddish-brown varnish, visible age and character, and a particularly appealing, mature appearance.

The cello has a warm, resonant and projecting sound and is currently playable. It has a nice depth of tone and responds well across the instrument.

The instrument has clearly had a long playing life and shows age-related wear, scratches, scuffs and worn edges, consistent with its age. There are also some repaired cracks, including a split to the back and further splits to the front and ribs, as noted in the original auction-house condition report.

The cello is unlabelled internally. The Mittenwald attribution is based on the description provided by the auction house at the time of purchase.
