Musician (Tenor Saxophone/Clarinet)

The Band of the South Australia Police is seeking an accomplished and versatile Tenor Saxophonist, ideally with experience in jazz and improvisation, to join the Band of the South Australia Police in a full-time permanent position based at the Gepps Cross Police Complex.

It is highly desirable that applicants have existing clarinet doubling skills, including in jazz, or can demonstrate the aptitude and willingness to develop them.

The successful applicant will demonstrate versatility and perform confidently across a broad range of musical genres and ensemble settings, from concert band repertoire to traditional jazz, contemporary, commercial and big band music. Particular emphasis will be placed on the ability to improvise in traditional jazz, swing and big band styles. Applicants must demonstrate an authentic understanding of jazz idioms, phrasing, articulation and stylistic interpretation.

About the Role

The Band of the South Australia Police, established in 1884, performs a wide range of music across South Australia, supporting SAPOL and engaging communities through music.

This role combines professional musicianship with performances at ceremonies, concerts, community events, major public events and contemporary entertainment engagements. Musicians must be adaptable across different ensembles, musical styles and performance settings while maintaining high professional standards.

We are seeking a reliable, well-prepared team player who is confident performing in both ensemble and solo roles.

All members perform and march with the Parade Band. Training is provided, but members must maintain high standards of presentation, discipline and professionalism. A reasonable level of fitness, resilience and adaptability is required.

Band members work shifts, including evenings and weekends, and regularly travel throughout regional South Australia, with occasional interstate and overseas travel. Relevant allowances apply.

Audition
Applicants must submit a high-quality recording of 5 to 10 minutes' duration demonstrating versatility across at least three contrasting works, including an improvised performance and a demonstration of any doubling instrument. Copies of all relevant sheet music must also be provided.

Shortlisted candidates will attend a live audition featuring concert band, parade band and ensemble excerpts, together with opportunities to demonstrate improvisation. The final stage will consist of mock rehearsals with two small ensembles, including the SAPOL Dixieland Band.

Auditions will be held on 2 and 3 November 2026 at the Band facility in Gepps Cross, South Australia.

Eligibility
Applicants must be Australian or New Zealand citizens, or hold Australian permanent residency. Band members are appointed as police officers but do not undertake operational policing duties. Medical, psychological and probity assessments form part of the recruitment process. Flexible working arrangements, including part-time arrangements, may be available. Applications should include a current CV outlining relevant qualifications, professional performance experience and other applicable musical experience.
